Salle's works have a surrealist quality similar to Dali. I really like the conbination of images that Salle presents to the viewer, compelling us to wonder what this mixture could represent, while allowing us to also interpret his work in manner personal to us. The fact that he used pornographic images as an inspiration for many of his painting is intriguing to me, and I believe that perhaps it's Salle's reaction to the noncommittal and pleasure seeking tendencies of modern American society. The human forms he paints so eloquently are provacative and at times seem to suffer, perhaps serving as a metaphor for his interpretation of the reaction of the human spirit to the injustices that cut so deeply into modern society.
